When is a female dog ready to breed
Q: I was wondering when a female dog is ready to breed(i always hear it is best to skip the first heat and wait until the second)and how to keep her health conditions up to par for the sake of the puppies.she is seven and a half months old now.she is an all white pittbull. i dont know if she is considered to be albino or not, but she was born all white. she is highly active.i do not fight my dog like other people. i just love the breed of dog.
A: I usually wait until third heat to breed. feed all natural diet like pet guard or wellness brands as well as put her on good supplement protocol like vitachews from 1800petmeds as well as prozyme and brite coat xs.

Ear infections
Q: Can you give oral antibotics for ear infection for a dog instead of ear drops. i have a dog that i can't put ear drops in. she was hit by a car several years ago and broke both legs and spent alot of time with treatment. since then unable to give any type of treatment. can 't even get a muzzle on her
A: Sometimes oral meds can work a bit. most of time most effective however whihc often will reduce pain/inflammation to allow you to place ear drops in would be low dose cortisone as well in addition to antibiotics orally which dont penetrate ears enough as do topicals directly applied.
Too old for teeth cleaning???
Q: I have 2 16 yr old poodles weighing 14 lbs. each. my vet told me they are too old for teeth cleaning but they have a dental infection. he prescribed antirobe. it clears up while taking this med but starts back up (coughing) when not in use. is there an issue with long term use? if i get the 150 mg. is it accurate for each dog to get half a pill 2 x daily? thank you and have a nice day, kim
A: That dose is ok even though a bit high. long term use of any antibiotic especially this one can upset intestinal bacterial population and eventually lead to digestive symptoms like vomit/diarrhea or weight loss. if used long term, i would use a probiotic from health food store added to their diet to help wtih healthy gut bacteria as well as prozyme from 1800petmeds as well

Posibly rickets
Q: I am caring for a puppiy whose front legs get tired and bow out i think she has rickets she had a collar sewn on her neck which didnt permit her neck to grow and probably wouldnt allow food to pass im giving her childrens vitamins she also has sarcoptic mange but has been progressing in both weight and health what do you think? thank you in advance karen
A: I would take her to vet to be evaluated. i doubt she has rickets which is rare in dogs. just put in good diet like pet guard and good multi vitamin suppement like vitachews from 1800petmeds.

Hypothyroidism
Q: Do you agree/disagree that a dog losing hair, now diagnosed with hpyothroidism, would also have to have a biopsy where the hair is falling out. i was told that hypothroid is a symptom of other underlying disease. true or not????
A: Hypothyroid is usually its own autoimmune hormonal disease in most cases. if hair loss does not improve on thyroid meds after a few months then have skin biopsy to check out other possibilites
Chocolate by accident
Q: Hi, i have an 8 month old cavalier king charles spaniel that is tall enough to get things off the dining room table and my oldest daughter had some chocolate candy on the table which my dog snatched and ate before i could catch him. could this be harmful to him on a one time occasion?
A: If he is fine in several hours after ingestion then it should be no problem. chocolate is toxic to individual sensitive dogs most commonly in these situations causing gastrointestinal upset while in rare cases causing neurological hyperactivity and even seizures. other dogs are not affected at all |
